The ASME Medal, which was established in 1920, recognizes eminently distinguished engineering achievement. Reddy, an ASME Fellow, received the award for his contributions to applied mechanics through authored textbooks and the development of shear deformation plate and shell finite elements for the accurate determination of interlaminar stresses in composite structures, which have had a major impact on engineering education and practice. Helen L. Reed, professor of aerospace engineering at Texas A&M University, received the ASME Kate Gleason Award at this years Honors Assembly.Dr. Duderstadt, president emeritus and university professor of science and engineering at the University of Michigan, was presented the ASME Ralph Coats Roe Medal, which recognizes an outstanding contribution toward a better public understanding and appreciation of the engineers worth to contemporary society. Duderstadt was honored for his s ignificant contributions to the engineering profession and society through research, teaching, public policy and tafelgeschirr activities. In his current lokalitt at the University of Michigan, he is co-director of the schools Science, Technology and Public Policy Program and director of the Millennium Project, a research center that explores the impact of over-the-horizon technologies on society.Dr. Reed, professor of aerospace engineering at Texas AM University, received the ASME Kate Gleason Award for lifetime achievement in the fundamental understanding and control of boundary layer transition for high-efficiency aerospace vehicles, and in pioneering small satellite design and implementation. The award, which was established in 2011 in honor of the first female engineer to become a full member of ASME, recognizes women engineers who are either highly successful entrepreneurs in a field of engineering or who have had a lifetime of achievement in the engineering profe ssion. Reed, an ASME Fellow, is currently Regents Professor, Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence and holder of the Edward Pete Aldridge 60 Professorship at Texas AM. Bernard E. Hrubala, who recently retired from TV Rheinland AIA Services LLC in Houston, received the ASME Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal at the ceremony.Evangelos Trifon Laskaris, Ph.D., chief engineer in diagnostics imaging and biomedical technologies at GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna, N.Y., was also among the honorees at the event. Dr. Laskaris was the recipient of the Nancy DeLoye Fitzroy and Roland V. Fitzroy Medal, for pioneering contributions to the frontiers of engineering leading to breakthroughs in existing technology or leading to new applications or new areas of engineering endeavor. Laskaris was honored for his pioneering contributions to the design and construction of superconducting magnets for magnetic resonance imaging systems and energy applications, and for his continued efforts to increase the affordability and availability of MRI equipment within the worlds underserved regions.Bernard E. Hrubala, until recently the global business development manager for pressure equipment certification at TV Rheinland AIA Services LLC in Houston, received the ASME Melvin R. Dr. Zhang was recognized her pioneering research in tissue engineering and biomechanics for the development of novel biologically inspired nanomaterials and for research in the integration of nanobiomaterials with advanced 3D bioprinting for complex tissue and organ regeneration. Three ASME Fellows - Christina H. Amon, Ph.D., Ashwani Gupta, Ph.D., and Shiv G. Kapoor, Ph.D. - were elevated to the highest level membership in the Society, Honorary Membership, at the Honors Assembly this year. The award, which was fir st bestowed in 1880, the founding year of the Society, recognizes a lifetime of distinguished tafelgeschirr by individuals whose work has contributed substantially to the highest goals of the engineering profession. Christina H. But that always leaves the lingering question: “But does this stuff work in the real world?”So who  really  knows about being cool as a cucumber under the most intense pressure imaginable? I’d  read  that when top bomb disposal experts approach a device designed to kill them, their heart rate actually goes  down. Folks, I think we have a winner…So I called a Navy EOD Team Leader.Navy EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) isn’t like your average police department’s bomb disposal unit. These guys defuse  torpedoes - while underwater. They disable  biological weapons, chemical weapons… even  nuclear  weapons.For security purposes our friend  requested to remain anonymous. He’s been deployed in both Iraq and Afghanistan and faced some things that are - quite literally - the stuff of nightmares. Repeatedly.So what can you and I le arn from him? How do you stay chill, keep your focus and make tough decisions when facing  the most intense pressure imaginable?Let’s get to it . . .Avoid “the rabbit hole” and do a threat assessmentSomething’s going wrong. You’re worried and your mind starts to race. Your old friend Panic is nuzzling up to you and wants to snuggle. Your brain starts asking, “What if X happens? What if Y happens? What if? What if? What if?”Navy EOD techs refer to this as “the rabbit hole.” And if you go down it, things are going to get very bad very fast. Here’s our EOD Team Leader:With any device that’s  improvised we talk about “rabbit holes.” You can go down the rabbit hole of “What if they put in  this? What if they included this bit of circuitry or this kind of switch or this crazy new device or circuit board or whatever?” The opportunities for people to construct new and ingenious and totally insidious IEDs is just infinite. It’s possible when you’re looking a t the device to go down a rabbit hole of “It could be this, it could be this, it could be these 10,000 different things…”You need to avoid going down the “rabbit hole” and do what Navy EOD techs call a “threat assessment.”  That  means looking objectively at the situation and asking, “What kind of problem is this?”Think about a similar situation you’ve been in before that looked like this one. How did you resolve it? What worked? Maybe you’ve never been in a situation  exactly  like the current one, but that’s okay. Generalize. You’ve probably dealt with something that was  kinda  similar or you’ve seen someone else  do it.Leveraging experience  is what makes the top Navy EODs able to stay calm and size up  a terrifying situation before they’ve even approached  the explosive device. Here’s our EOD Team Leader:They develop this sixth sense about what’s going on. Some of the guys had seen and prosecuted 300 or  400 devices. It was amazing what they co uld tell you before they ever saw the device. “This device is probably just a pressure plate, maybe with an S and A switch. There’s a possible secondary back-up waiting for us if we were to go at it from this angle.” They would just be able to tell that from merely looking at the situation.Leveraging your prior experience (or the experiences of others) is what allows you to wrap your brain around a very frightening  scenario and see it as just another version of a problem you’ve  solved before. But what mindset do you need to stay calm and focused before you act on this problem - or before you  cut that red wire?Emphasize the positive and focus on what you can controlOur EOD’s superior officer once told him a story about trying to defuse a mine while underwater - and r ealizing that he had become trapped, unable to move his hands or feet. What was the next thought that went through the chief’s  head?“I’m still breathing, so that’s good. Now what else do I have that’s going for me?”That’s  what you call “looking on the bright side.” Steven Southwick and Dennis Charney studied resilient people for over 20 years. They interviewed  Vietnam prisoners of war, Special Forces instructors and civilians who dealt with terrible experiences like medical problems,  abuse and trauma. And what was one of the things that kept all of these survivors going?  Optimism.By starting with the good, but staying realistic about the facts of the situation, our EOD’s superior was able to stay calm and focus on what he was able to control and start taking steps toward resolving the situation. Our EOD friend explains:He’s like, “If you can wiggle your fingers, the line that’s wrapped around you or whatever situation you’re in, if you can do one lit tle thing to make it a little bit better, then do that. If you can do another thing and then another thing, and then you can have cascading positivity as opposed to spiraling negativity.” You get to know the technical parameters of whatever job you’re doing and then you go, “Is this really an emergency? Yeah, but it’s really only an emergency if I can’t find a solution. What is my next step to make this situation just slightly better?”Again:  He was underwater, unable to move his hands or feet, and was next to an explosive device. But he didn’t see it as an emergency.It was only an emergency if he couldn’t find a solution. Sound crazy?You’re moving at 65 miles an hour toward a concrete wall. Scary? If  that concrete wall is a natural bend in the highway and you can just turn the steering wheel of your car gently to the left, you wouldn’t be frightened. In fact, you probably do it all the time without thinking about it. You need to get in there and solve the problem at hand. How do you keep your cool and stay focused when you’re in the thick of it?The secret to calm and focus is knowing the next stepWe’re all scared of the unknown. Because then your brain turns to speculating. To worrying. And that takes you down the rabbit hole. The secret to calm and focus is simply deciding  what you need to do next. That prevents the gap from opening up where the speculation and worrying grows.  Here’s our EOD Team Leader:When you have something to concentrate on, your mind can remain focused no matter what’s happening. If there is some kind of device and you need to do something and you’re clearly in a hazardous situation, you knew what the next step was. If you were sitting there and had no idea what to do, that would be really terrifying. When you have the next step in your mind, then that’s what you focus on.Maybe  what’s next is just a baby step. That’ll do. Maybe you are so out of your depth that the next step is “ask for help.” That’s actually a good one. You don’t need to fix everything in one fell swoop. You just need to know your next step and you can keep it together.Now when you consider your next step, you want to think technically and specifically to resist panic.  And be grateful you don’t have to face situations like our friend  did - when you’re 130 feet underwater and your breathing equipment fails:My dive rig was having a primary electronics assembly failure, meaning it  was no longer actually providing me the oxygen that I needed to live. By definition this is an emergency, but when you know the way that system works, when you know that there’s the manual override, that you can provide yourself oxygen and you can actually manually drive the rig, then I know  what I ne ed to do to get myself out of this situation. When you think about it in those terms, which is to get away from the label of what this situation is and then get into what is technically going on here, then it’s a lot easier. Then you don’t get focused on the fear. You get focused on “What’s my next step?”The ancient Stoics avoided negative emotions by  focusing on process, not outcomes. And that’s what you want to do. Focus on your next step, and then the next step, and then the next…I know what some people are thinking:  â€œBut what if I don’t know my next step? How do I get my  calm back if I lose it?”Our EOD friend has been there. And he’s been there with a bomb in front of him:The only time I ever really felt crippling fear was the moment that I lost sight of what my next step was. We were in a situation where there was a device and it  was way more dangerous than what we expected. I had not done a good job because I had not prepared myself for the worst case scenario. For the first time as an officer, I was like, “I don’t know what to do.” I was scared for my team. I was scared for myself.What should you do when you’re lost for a next step and your brain is filled with anxious thoughts? There’s an answer - one that Buddhist monks and PhD neuroscientists would agree on:Just consider  those racing thoughts in your head and ask yourself, “Are they helpful?”  And then make a decision.When I spoke to leading mindfulness expert  Joseph Goldstein  about how to deal with troublesome thoughts he said:This thought which has arisen, is it helpful? Is it serving me or others in some way or is it not? Is it just playing out perhaps old conditions of fear or judgment or things that are not very helpful for ourselves or others?And guess what our bomb disposal  buddy did to resolve the situation? He’s no mindfulness expert - but he knows what works when panic sets in.  See if what our EOD Team Leader told me sounds familiar:Then I th ought, “This is not helpful. None of this is helpful. What do I do now?” Then I thought, “This is what needs to happen. We need to make this radio call. The guys down range need to be conducting this action. We need to push this group here. We need to move this group.” Then all of a sudden, you’re back into your rational thought and away from any kind of selfish fear.He asked if the thoughts were helpful. They weren’t. And so, to the best of his ability, he just made a decision on what his next step would be. And  neuroscience research  shows that making decisions reduces worry and anxiety - as well as helping you  solve problems.Via  The Upward Spiral:Making decisions includes creating intentions and setting goals - all three are part of the same neural circuitry and engage the prefrontal cortex in a positive way, reducing worry and anxiety. Making decisions also helps overcome striatum activity, which usually pulls you toward negative impulses and routines. We’ve learned a lot. You’ve probably dealt with something that was  kinda  similar or you’ve seen someone else  do it.Leveraging experience  is what makes the top Navy EODs able to stay calm and size up  a terrifying situation before they’ve even approached  the explosive device. Here’s our EOD Team Leader:They develop this sixth sense about what’s going on. Some of the guys had seen and prosecuted 300 or  400 devices. It was amazing what they co uld tell you before they ever saw the device. “This device is probably just a pressure plate, maybe with an S and A switch. There’s a possible secondary back-up waiting for us if we were to go at it from this angle.” They would just be able to tell that from merely looking at the situation.Leveraging your prior experience (or the experiences of others) is what allows you to wrap your brain around a very frightening  scenario and see it as just another version of a problem you’ve  solved before. And that allows you to keep moving forward when you’re scared.(To learn a Navy SEAL’s secrets to developing grit, click  here.)Alright, you dodged the rabbit hole and you’ve done a threat assessment. But what mindset do you need to stay calm and focused before you act on this problem - or before you  cut that red wire?Emphasize the positive and focus on what you can controlOur EOD’s superior officer once told him a story about trying to defuse a mine while underwater - and r ealizing that he had become trapped, unable to move his hands or feet. What was the next thought that went through the chief’s  head?“I’m still breathing, so that’s good. Now what else do I have that’s going for me?”That’s  what you call “looking on the bright side.” Steven Southwick and Dennis Charney studied resilient people for over 20 years. They interviewed  Vietnam prisoners of war, Special Forces instructors and civilians who dealt with terrible experiences like medical problems,  abuse and trauma. And what was one of the things that kept all of these survivors going?  Optimism.By starting with the good, but staying realistic about the facts of the situation, our EOD’s superior was able to stay calm and focus on what he was able to control and start taking steps toward resolving the situation. Our EOD friend explains:He’s like, “If you can wiggle your fingers, the line that’s wrapped around you or whatever situation you’re in, if you can do one lit tle thing to make it a little bit better, then do that. If you can do another thing and then another thing, and then you can have cascading positivity as opposed to spiraling negativity.” You get to know the technical parameters of whatever job you’re doing and then you go, “Is this really an emergency? Yeah, but it’s really only an emergency if I can’t find a solution. What is my next step to make this situation just slightly better?”Again:  He was underwater, unable to move his hands or feet, and was next to an explosive device. But he didn’t see it as an emergency.It was only an emergency if he couldn’t find a solution. Sound crazy?You’re moving at 65 miles an hour toward a concrete wall. Scary? If  that concrete wall is a natural bend in the highway and you can just turn the steering wheel of your car gently to the left, you wouldn’t be frightened. In fact, you probably do it all the time without thinking about it. Not an emergency.Life and death  stakes donâ €™t  faze you if you’re optimistic and feel you have some control.(To learn how Navy SEALs and Olympians increase mental toughness, click  here.)So now it’s time to act. You need to get in there and solve the problem at hand. How do you keep your cool and stay focused when you’re in the thick of it?The secret to calm and focus is knowing the next stepWe’re all scared of the unknown. Because then your brain turns to speculating. To worrying. And that takes you down the rabbit hole. The secret to calm and focus is simply deciding  what you need to do next. That prevents the gap from opening up where the speculation and worrying grows.  Here’s our EOD Team Leader:When you have something to concentrate on, your mind can remain focused no matter what’s happening. If there is some kind of device and you need to do something and you’re clearly in a hazardous situation, you knew what the next step was. If you were sitting there and had no idea what to do, that would be really terrifying. When you have the next step in your mind, then that’s what you focus on.Maybe  what’s next is just a baby step. That’ll do. Maybe you are so out of your depth that the next step is “ask for help.” That’s actually a good one. You don’t need to fix everything in one fell swoop. You just need to know your next step and you can keep it together.Now when you consider your next step, you want to think technically and specifically to resist panic.  And be grateful you don’t have to face situations like our friend  did - when you’re 130 feet underwater and your breathing equipment fails:My dive rig was having a primary electronics assembly failure, meaning it  was no longer actually providing me the oxygen that I needed to live. By definition this is an emergency, but when you know the way that system works, when you know that there’s the manual override, that you can provide yourself oxygen and you can actually manually drive the rig, then I know  what I ne ed to do to get myself out of this situation. When you think about it in those terms, which is to get away from the label of what this situation is and then get into what is technically going on here, then it’s a lot easier. Then you don’t get focused on the fear. You get focused on “What’s my next step?”The ancient Stoics avoided negative emotions by  focusing on process, not outcomes. And that’s what you want to do. Focus on your next step, and then the next step, and then the next…I know what some people are thinking:  â€œBut what if I don’t know my next step? How do I get my  calm back if I lose it?”Our EOD friend has been there. And he’s been there with a bomb in front of him:The only time I ever really felt crippling fear was the moment that I lost sight of what my next step was. We were in a situation where there was a device and it  was way more dangerous than what we expected. I had not done a good job because I had not prepared myself for the worst case scenario. For the first time as an officer, I was like, “I don’t know what to do.” I was scared for my team. I was scared for myself.What should you do when you’re lost for a next step and your brain is filled with anxious thoughts? There’s an answer - one that Buddhist monks and PhD neuroscientists would agree on:Just consider  those racing thoughts in your head and ask yourself, “Are they helpful?”  And then make a decision.When I spoke to leading mindfulness expert  Joseph Goldstein  about how to deal with troublesome thoughts he said:This thought which has arisen, is it helpful? Is it serving me or others in some way or is it not? Is it just playing out perhaps old conditions of fear or judgment or things that are not very helpful for ourselves or others?And guess what our bomb disposal  buddy did to resolve the situation? He’s no mindfulness expert - but he knows what works when panic sets in.  See if what our EOD Team Leader told me sounds familiar:Then I th ought, “This is not helpful. None of this is helpful. What do I do now?” Then I thought, “This is what needs to happen. We need to make this radio call. The guys down range need to be conducting this action. We need to push this group here. We need to move this group.” Then all of a sudden, you’re back into your rational thought and away from any kind of selfish fear.He asked if the thoughts were helpful. They weren’t. And so, to the best of his ability, he just made a decision on what his next step would be. And  neuroscience research  shows that making decisions reduces worry and anxiety - as well as helping you  solve problems.Via  The Upward Spiral:Making decisions includes creating intentions and setting goals - all three are part of the same neural circuitry and engage the prefrontal cortex in a positive way, reducing worry and anxiety. Making decisions also helps overcome striatum activity, which usually pulls you toward negative impulses and routines. We’ve learned a lot. Let’s round it up and learn one last secret from our EOD friend that can help you be ready for challenges before they ever occur…Sum upHere’s what you need to know about how to be calm under pressure, from a Navy bomb disposal expert: Avoid “The Rabbit Hole” And Do A Threat Assessment: Ignore  the “What if?” questions. What’s a similar problem you’ve dealt with? Leverage prior experience to calmly size up challenges. Emphasize The Positive And Focus On What You Can Control: Take a second to think about just how dangerous driving a car actually is. But it doesn’t faze you. A feeling of control makes all the difference. The Secret To Calm And Focus Is Knowing The Next Step: Ignore thoughts that aren’t helpful. Make a decision. Focus on the next step and you won’t panic. There’s a saying  about bomb disposal:EOD is the science of vague assumptions based on debatable data taken from inconclusive experiments with instruments of problematic accuracy by persons of questionable mentality.Cute, huh? It’s an uncertain job with the highest of stakes. But it must be done. And so the people that do it can’t sleepwalk through their job. Are You Adding as Much Value as You Think Are You Adding as Much Value as You Think Do you ever find yourself wishing your employer was more willing to invest in you? In 2014, a Tinypulse employee engagement report showed that only 21% of employees feel strongly valued at work. Typically, your personal opinion of your value at work is comprised of two components: Income Recognition Although employers seem to be behind the 8-ball when it comes to recognizing performance, it has been becoming more of a focus of many companies in recent years. End all the finger pointing As an employee, it’s easy to point the finger at your employer and say, “They just don’t get it.” What you don’t want to admit is that they are often justified in saying the same thing about you. I speak with business owners quite frequently about the challenges they have managing Millennials in the workforce. And before you think I’m picking on all Millennials, I have written several articles criticizing leaders for blaming this younger generation for all of their problems. Leaders certainly have to look inward in order to manage employees who may see the world differently than they do. Good leaders adapt to remain effective. But in this article, I’m going to need to give you, and all Millennials, some tough love. Business owners share frustrations The business owners I spoke with shared a few frustrations that I felt were relevant. First and foremost: Their employees have made it very clear that Millennials aspire for advancement. They want raises and better titles quicker than ever before, and they are pretty good at making those desires known. But the bold behavior is not enough I commend Millennials for being bold. They have been told from the very beginning, “If you want something, you have to go and get it.” It’s a very important piece of the puzzle. But they’re missing the most important piece of the puzzle. Everyone needs to earnthat additional title or additional pay. Showing up, sometimes on time, doing your job, and ensuring you’re the first one out of the office at the end of the day is not a recipe for a raise or a promotion. Simply existing and breathing company air does not earn you more money or recognition. Recognition and raises are reserved for those who do something special and increase their value to the company. Here is a common costly mindset Your employers need to see that you can handle more than an entry-level job if you want to advance. And many of them offer opportunities to take on an additional responsibility such as: Serve on a committee in the company. Head up a new initiative/project outside of your scope. The problem is that instead of seeing additional responsibilities as an opportunity, many reject the idea of doing more for an employer without being compensated immediately for it. If you’re doing extra work, you’re damn well going to get paid for it, right? Think again. Those of you with that mindset are costing yourselves far more than what you would gain in the short-term. What a fantastic opportunity to add value. That’s the key! Add value. Avoid unrealistic expectations If you continue to do the bare minimum inside your contained job description, why should the employer offer an opportunity to advance? Why should he or she pay you more? I have bad news for you. They shouldn’t. In fact, you’re lucky if you get a raise at all. Stop basing your efforts on the expectation of a short-term payoff. If you take on extra responsibility at your company, the worst-case scenario is that it goes unnoticed, unappreciated, and uncompensated. But in this unlikely instance, you now have the excellent experience to add to your resume that will help you get a job with a company who appreciates employees that go the extra mile. Whether it pays off at your current company or the next one, it will pay off! Here’s an idea for you If you’re currently feeling undervalued, go to your supervisor and request more responsibilities. Make it clear that you are doing this to show your capabilities to handle new challenges, and that you hope to advance as a result. It may happen next month or next year, but when that position to which you have been aspiring opens up, how much better of a chance do you think you have of getting it, compared to before? Think about that. In this day and age, how many people do you think have ever come up to that supervisor and made that request? One small note Make sure it is abundantly clear why you are taking on additional responsibilities. And furthermore, make sure the additional responsibilities are going to contribute to your growth and development. This isn’t just more work for the sake of more work. Finally getting more in your professional career Like it or not, to get more in your professional career, you have to show that you can do more. You have to set yourself apart from your peers. In a day when most people have a solid understanding in the importance of their personal brand on social media, it’s amazing that they don’t think the same way about their brand as an employee within their own company. You may think I’m wrong. But there’s really only one way to find out. Give it a try!

The award was presented to Hockenberry at the AAES Annual Awards Banquet and Ceremony on April 20 in Washington, D.C. Hockenberry was selected to receive the award for his outstanding contributions to improve public understanding of standards creation and the engineering profession. These endeavors included hosting Meeting the Standard, a four-part series discussing ASMEs activities in the area of codes and stands that aired on his radio program The Takeaway in January 2014, and moderating the ASME Decision Point Dialogue session Critical Thinking, Critical Choices: What Really Matters in STEM, which kicked off the U.S. News STEM Solutions Conference in Washington, D.C., in April 2014. Hockenberry was nominated for the award by ASME Executive Director Thomas G. Loughlin, who attended the AAES banquet. ASME President Julio C. Guerrero, Immediate Past President J. Robert Sims and Past President Madiha El Mehelmy Kotb also represented the Society at the ceremony. A three-time Peabody Award winner and four-time Emmy winner, Hockenberry is the creator, host and co-managing editor of The Takeaway, a morning radio news program that was co-produced by WNYC-New York Public Radio and Public Radio International in collaboration with editorial partners The New York Times and WGBH Radio in Boston. We’ve heard this idiom many times before, but in this tight job market it takes on new meaning. Being informed about a job and well-versed in a company’s expectations, needs and culture have never been more important when it comes to being a stand-out job applicant. On the eve of the new year, I spoke with  Cheryl Roubian, Director of Talent, Greenhouse Software who couldn’t agree more. “Get really clear for yourself about the profile of role and company you’re looking for,” says Roubian. “Candidates should expect to have a clear picture of what their role and responsibilities would be and what the company is like and should be prepared to demonstrate how they can add to the business and culture.” Being an informed candidate and showing this knowledge throughout the application process  - in your resume, cover letter (no, it’s not dead!), through thoughtful interview questions and replies  - are essential for beating the competition for in-demand jobs. Here are a few other key ways to land a job at a Best Places to Work winner like Greenhouse : Glassdoor: As a director of talent, how are you looking at candidates differently in 2019? Or are the ways you and your team evaluating candidates changing given the job landscape? Cheryl Roubian: The market is really tight and all signs indicate it will continue to be. But good hiring is the same in any market: define the attributes that will make someone successful for a particular role and then test for those attributes. Candidate experience is a big part of that as well. Candidates should expect to have a clear picture of what their role and responsibilities would be and what the company is like and should be prepared to demonstrate how they can add to the business and culture. Glassdoor: Many people say the cover letter is dead, especially in 2019. Is it still an important factor in the application? If not, what matters more? Cheryl Roubian: A well-written cover letter that is thoughtful, genuine, informative, and targeted at the company and role you’re applying for is still very relevant. It sets you apart from candidates who apply en masse to open roles and may be the deciding factor if the recruiter is on the fence about whether or not your skill set is relevant. Glassdoor: Landing a new job isn’t just about submitting a resume and interviewing, it’s about getting to know a company and really gauging alignment and fit. What are your tips for how job seekers can determine whether a company is right for them? Cheryl Roubian: Get really clear for yourself about the profile of role and company you’re looking for (e.g., inclusive culture, sustainable business, compelling purpose). What questions will you need to ask to test for those things? Ask those questions of every interviewer you meet in your process and then look for patterns. If everyone is generally saying the same thing (and you like what they’re saying) that’s probably a good sign. Good companies use this structured hiring process to interview you. Set yourself apart by using it on them! Glassdoor: How is landing a new job at a small- or medium-sized company like Greenhouse different from angling for a gig at a big company? Cheryl Roubian: At small or medium-sized companies like Greenhouse, it’s a lot easier to see the impact of your work on overall business success. Every deal makes a difference. Every customer matters. Your involvement in the organization and culture can visibly make a difference. Glassdoor: Once candidates evaluate company culture and are hopefully extended an offer, how should job seekers be approaching negotiations in 2019? Cheryl Roubian: Unless being a strong negotiator is part of your job description (i.e., you’re in sales), being able to negotiate a fair title or market salary shouldn’t be a requirement for a fair offer. Educate yourself about the company â€" what they’re able to offer will depend on a bunch of different factors â€" e.g., size, industry, funding. Look at the whole picture and don’t expect a 50-person startup to offer the same package as a company like Google. Good companies will have a philosophy or framework to help them make fair and equitable offers. It’s ok to ask how a company arrived at the offer they made you.

Peter Cooper Peter Cooper Peter Cooper What do you do after making your first million? Peter Cooper (1791-1883) was unlike any other inventor, engineer or philanthropist who lived during the industrial age. His wealth was self-made and he was loved by many because of his genuine, deep, and unfailing love for his fellow man. His efforts benefited not only individuals, students, workers, and families, but society and humankind as well. Growing up working in industrial New York, Cooper became familiar with many trades. He apprenticed building cloth-shearing machines during his teens, then started his own shearing company, which did well enough to enable him to purchase a grocery business. He used the proceeds from selling the grocery business, which he didnt enjoy, to buy a glue factory. After creating ten different grades of glue, he found a way to freeze-dry it, creating a food-grade gelatin from the lightest grade. Though his patented, portable, dried form of gelatin later became Jell-O, his fortune came instead from his glue company, which had become a wildly successful monopoly. Cooper used these fortunes to purchase a steel mill, and became active in the mining and railroad industries. Producing railroad track helped him rise to become a leader in the steel trade and to be at the forefront of the industrial innovation. “Tom Thumb” engine. During the 1830s it was much doubted in England that steam-powered locomotive engines could be used on curved rails, especially the twisting, inclined track near Baltimore, MD. Experimenting with conical wheels and a steam-powered engine, Cooper built the Tom Thumb for the Baltimore Ohio Railroad Company. It became the first steam locomotive to run in the U.S., proving conclusively that steam-power may be used on our road with as much facility and effect as that of horses, at a very reduced expense, according to Cooper. Being a forward thinker, Cooper designed an elevator shaft in a multi-story building before elevators had been invented. He suspected that soon there would be a mechanical method to transport people in this space. His elevator shaft was circular-shaped because, according to him, it was the most efficient design.
